What it is

The NRX 50C is Dometic's current 12/24V compressor upright fridge — part of the CoolMatic NRX range that replaced the CRX series. It gives you 44 litres of usable space with a removable 4.4-litre freezer, so you can run it as a fridge with a small freezer, as a full 44-litre fridge with the box taken out, or as a freezer.

Note on the name: it is sold as the "50" but the true usable capacity is 44 litres. We list it as 44L so you size your cabinet off the right number.

It is the natural mid-size choice for a Sprinter, Crafter or MAN TGE build — a step up from the WCR50 in both finish and electronics.

Dometic does not publish a single headline wattage or kWh/24h for the variable-speed compressor — see "Fitting it" for the real-world current draw. The 525 × 380 × 510mm body is confirmed against the Dometic manual; build to that plus the 50mm clearance.

Why we sell it

The NRX is Dometic's current flagship 12V range, and the 50C is the size that suits most mid-length van kitchens. It is the fridge to choose when you want the latest electronics and efficiency rather than the value end.

  • Current generation, more efficient. Dometic rates the NRX range at around 9% more efficient than the CRX it replaces — that matters when you are running off battery and solar.
  • Three modes and Winter Mode. Eco, Boost and Silent let you trade speed against power draw and noise; Winter Mode keeps the fridge healthy when the van is stored unused.
  • Flexible interior. The removable freezer lets it run as a fridge, a fridge-freezer or a full freezer, and the hinge is reversible to suit either side of your build.
  • Proper Dometic, proper support. A real UK service network behind it, not a marketplace unknown.

How it compares

vs the Waeco WCR range

The WCR fridges are the value end — simpler controls, older generation. The NRX is the current Dometic range: more efficient, three modes plus Winter Mode, and refreshed electronics. Choose the WCR to save money, the NRX for the latest features and efficiency.

vs an absorption (3-way) fridge

The NRX holds temperature far better in heat, cools properly on 12V, and does not need the van to be level. A 3-way only wins if you specifically want gas running with no electrics.

Fitting it

  • Ventilation. It sheds heat at the back, so leave at least 50mm of free air all round (Dometic's minimum) — an inlet low and an outlet high. Do not box it in airtight.
  • Cabinet aperture. Build to the external 525 × 380 × 510mm plus that 50mm clearance. There is no fixed cut-out box — an optional flush-mount frame is available for a finished look.
  • Power. 12/24V to the leisure circuit on fused, correctly gauged cable. Expect roughly 1.1 A/h in mild conditions and up to about 1.7 A/h in real heat — it only draws while the compressor cycles.
  • Door swing. Plan the swing so it clears the walkway and cabinets. The hinge is reversible — decide the side before fitting.
  • Off-season. Leave the vent-lock open and use Winter Mode when the van is stored so the interior does not go stale.

Questions and answers

How much battery will it use?

It is a variable-speed compressor fridge, so it only draws power while the compressor is running, not constantly. In mild conditions that works out around 1.1 A/h, rising toward 1.7 A/h in hot weather — roughly 25–40Ah over a day depending on heat and how often the door is opened. A 100Ah+ leisure or lithium battery, ideally with some solar, runs it comfortably off-grid.

Can it actually freeze?

Yes. It has a 4.4-litre freezer compartment for ice and small frozen items, and the box is removable — take it out and you get the full 44 litres as fridge space, or run the whole cabinet colder.

Which side does the door open?

The hinge is reversible, so it can be set to open from either side to suit your layout. Decide which before you build it in — it is fiddlier to change afterwards.

Does it need ventilation when built in?

Yes. Like any compressor fridge it sheds heat at the back, so it needs airflow around the unit — leave at least 50mm of free air all round (Dometic's minimum) with an inlet low and an outlet high. It is climate class T (tropical), so it keeps working in hot weather provided it can breathe.

Can I run it off mains hook-up?

This model (NRX 50C, 9620001481) is 12/24V DC only — on hook-up it runs from your charger/converter via the leisure battery. If you specifically need a fridge with a built-in 230V mains supply, Dometic makes the same cabinet as the NRX 50E.

Does it have to be level like a 3-way fridge?

No. Compressor fridges tolerate slope and movement far better than 3-way absorption fridges, so you do not need to keep the van near-level for it to cool. That is one of the main reasons we fit compressor fridges.
