What it is

The MaxxFan Deluxe is a complete roof ventilation unit: a vent, a 10-speed fan and a rain cover built into one housing.

It clears damp air, condensation and cooking smells out of the van, or pulls fresh air in, and because the lid sits under its own rain cover you can leave it running through a downpour without water getting in.

It is the default choice for UK van conversions, and the reason is straightforward: it does everything the cheaper roof vents do, then adds reverse airflow and rain operation, and it stays quiet enough to sleep under.

Fitting only one powered vent in your build? Make it this one.

Why we sell it

We fit these in our own builds. What makes the Deluxe worth the money over a basic roof vent:

  • Reverse airflow. Exhaust mode pulls stale air and cooking smells out. Intake mode pushes fresh air in and pressurises the van, which is what actually clears condensation on a cold morning. Cheaper vents only exhaust.
  • Rain cover. The lid opens inside its own cover, so it runs in the rain. A standard vent has to be shut the moment it rains, which is exactly when a van full of wet kit needs ventilation most.
  • Thermostat and 10 speeds. Set a temperature and leave it. Speed 1 is quiet enough to sleep under; speed 10 shifts up to 1,500 cubic metres an hour.

It costs more than a basic roof fan. It is also the one you fit once and forget about, rather than replacing in two years.

Choosing your lid

Both lids are the same fan underneath. The only difference is light.

  • Clear/Tint — a translucent grey lid that lets daylight through when the fan is closed. Choose this if the fan is in a part of the van where you want the extra natural light, for example over a kitchen or living area.
  • Smoke — a solid dark lid that blocks light and glare. Choose this over a bed, or anywhere you want to keep a space dark, or if you simply prefer the cleaner look from outside.

If you are not sure, most builders pick Clear/Tint for living areas and Smoke over the bed.

Fitting it

Fitting a roof fan means cutting a hole in the roof, so it is worth knowing what is involved before you buy.

None of it is difficult for a competent self-builder, but each step matters.

  • Cut-out. The Deluxe needs a 400 x 400mm hole. If you are starting from a bare roof, you cut to fit. If you are replacing an existing rooflight (a Heki or a Fiamma Vent), the old cut-out is usually a slightly different size and you will need an adapter frame. Do not assume it drops straight in.
  • Roof thickness. It is designed for typical van roof skins. A heavily insulated build with a thick false roof may need spacer packing.
  • Sealant. Bed it on butyl tape and seal the flange with a polyurethane sealant such as Sikaflex 512. Get this right — a roof leak is the one mistake that ruins the interior underneath it.
  • Power. It is a 12V unit wired into the leisure circuit. At top speed it pulls around 3 amps, so continuous speed-10 running is not realistic on a small battery. Most of the time you run it low.
  • Headlining. You will need to trim the headlining or interior cladding around the internal frame.

Full step-by-step fitting guides for specific vans are linked at the bottom of this page.

If you are not confident cutting a hole in your roof, this is a fair job to pay an installer for.

Not included, and worth ordering at the same time: butyl tape, polyurethane sealant, and an adapter frame if you are replacing an existing rooflight.

How it compares

Short version: the MaxxFan Deluxe is the most capable powered roof vent in this price bracket. The honest trade-offs:

vs a basic roof vent (Fiamma Vent, MPK)

Those are lighter and cheaper but have no fan, or only a weak one, no reverse airflow and no rain operation. Fine as a second passive vent, not as your main one.

vs Fiamma Turbo Vent

The Turbo Vent has a fan but no reverse function and a less effective rain cover. Cheaper, less capable.

vs Dometic FanTastic Vent

The closest rival on fan performance, but the older platform has no rain cover, so it has to be shut when it rains.

Questions and answers

How much power does the MaxxFan Deluxe use?

It is a 12V unit. Airflow scales with fan speed, and at top speed it draws around 3 amps. In normal use you run it on a low speed, where the draw is modest. Continuous speed-10 running is not practical on a small leisure battery, so size your battery for realistic use, not the maximum.

Can you run it in the rain?

Yes. The lid opens inside an integrated rain cover, so the fan keeps running and rain stays out. This is the main reason to choose the Deluxe over a basic vent.

Does it come with a remote?

Yes. It is operated by remote control or by the manual knob on the unit.

Will it fit my existing rooflight hole?

Only if that hole is already 400 x 400mm. If you are replacing a Heki or a Fiamma Vent, the old cut-out is usually a different size and you will need an adapter frame. Check your current opening before ordering.

Clear/Tint lid or Smoke lid?

Both are the same fan; the lid is the only difference. The Clear/Tint lid is translucent grey and lets daylight through when the fan is closed, good for a kitchen or living area. The Smoke lid is solid and dark, it blocks light and glare, which suits fitting over a bed. Pick the lid to match where the fan is going.

Can I fit it myself?

Yes, if you are comfortable cutting an accurate 400 x 400mm hole in your roof and sealing it properly. It is a straightforward fit for a competent self-builder. If cutting the roof worries you, pay an installer; a bad seal causes leaks.
