Will it fit my van?

Pick your van and we will tell you which roof adapter you need plus what else to bundle for a clean install.

What it is

The MaxxFan Dome is a small 6-inch dome vent with a 12V fan. It pulls air OUT only (it is not reversible like the Deluxe). It fits a 159mm hole in the roof or the wall, intended for the bathroom, shower or wardrobe. Comes with a manual lid and a built-in rain shield.

Think of it as targeted extraction. It is not main ventilation for the living space.

Why we sell it

Two reasons:

  • It solves the bathroom problem. A van bathroom or shower wants extraction the moment you use it. The Dome over that ceiling spot pulls steam out the instant you switch it on, where running the main ventilation drags damp air through the whole van first.
  • Wall mount option is genuinely useful. Most extractors are roof-only. The Dome runs through a sidewall just as cleanly, which suits layouts where the shower is against an exterior wall and the roof above it is already used for a solar panel or the Deluxe.

CFM and cutout figures are commonly quoted from trade documentation; Maxxair does not publish a single CFM number for the Dome on its current product page. Always confirm against the supplied template before cutting.

Things to know

  • It is a small fan, set the expectation. About 200 CFM. The MaxxFan Deluxe is roughly 4× the airflow. If you want to move air through the whole van on a hot day, get the Deluxe.
  • Exhaust only. Unlike the Deluxe, the Dome cannot draw fresh outside air IN. It only pushes stale air out.
  • White yellows in UV. Long-term users report the white fan guard yellows after a few seasons of UK sun. The black version ages better visually.
  • Extension sleeve must be trimmed. For walls or roofs thicker than 25mm the supplied extension sleeve must be cut to your dimension before fitting. Instructions are unclear on this; measure twice, cut once.

Fitting it

  • Mark the 159mm circle with the supplied template
  • Cut from inside where possible, with a fine-tooth jigsaw or hole saw
  • Sikaflex 252 around the perimeter, butyl tape on the flange-to-roof or wall interface
  • Stainless screws, evenly torqued
  • Wire on the leisure circuit via a 5A inline fuse

Plenty of DIY tutorials online for the install. The Dome is a competent self-build job in 2 to 3 hours.

Questions and answers

Is the Dome a replacement for the MaxxFan Deluxe?

No. The Dome is a small 6-inch extractor for a single confined area: bathroom, shower, wardrobe. The Deluxe is the main ventilation unit for the whole van. They are different products with different jobs. Many builds fit one of each.

Roof or wall fit?

Both. The Dome mounts in a 6¼ inch (159mm) circular cutout on a roof or on a sidewall. Wall mounting runs the wires inside the van rather than across the roof.

Dome or Dome Plus?

The Plus variant adds an integrated LED ring with its own switch. Worth it in a bathroom where you want light and ventilation in one fitting. If you already have lighting in that area, the standard Dome is the sensible call.

Will it cool the van on a hot day?

No. The Dome is an exhaust-only extractor at about 200 CFM, roughly a quarter of the Deluxe's top airflow. For cooling a whole van on a hot day, get the Deluxe. The Dome's job is targeted extraction.

Does the white plastic yellow over time?

Some long-term UK users report the white fan guard yellowing after a few seasons of strong UV. The black version ages better visually. If your fan goes in a south-facing roof location, the black is the safer aesthetic call.

How thick a wall or roof can it mount through?

25mm is standard. Extension sleeves are available up to 150mm. The supplied extension sleeve has to be cut to your dimension before fitting — measure twice, leave 2-3mm play for the seal to compress.
